Bitter winters get blamed for a 600-year stall in the spread of farming across Europe. At Franchthi in Greece, 121 limpet shells show no winters of the modeled severity, but the test rests on one coastal site and no plant data. #Archaeology
What “paleoclimate” means
Wiktionary · Wikipediapaleoclimate
- nounThe climate of the Earth at a specified point in geologic time
Paleoclimatology is the scientific study of climates predating the invention of meteorological instruments, when no direct, artificial measurement data were available. As instrumental records only span a tiny part of Earth's history, the reconstruction of ancient climate is important to understand natural variation and the evolution of the current climate.
