Our medieval beast this week is the antelope (which isn't the modern antelope). It was considered so wild it couldn't be caught unless it tangled its horns in a tree as in this image from a 13th century French bestiary. #medievalmanuscript

What “antelopes” means
Wiktionary · Wikipediaantelopes
- nounAny of several African mammals of the family Bovidae distinguished by hollow horns, which, unlike deer, they do not shed.
An antelope is any of the extant or recently extinct species of the ruminant artiodactyl family Bovidae, which are indigenous to most of Africa, India, the Middle East, Central Asia, and a small area of Russia. Antelopes do not form a monophyletic group, as some antelopes are more closely related to other bovid groups, such as bovines, goats, and sheep, than to other antelopes.
